Scientific Investigations

QuestionAnswer
1. Hypothesis Is a possible explanation for a set of observations or a possible answer to a scientific question.
2. Experiments Is used to test your hypothesis.
3. Variables All factors that can change in an experiment.
4. Independent Variable What you CHANGE
5. Dependent Variable What you OBSERVE
6. Controlled Variable What you keep the SAME
7. Controlled Experiment An experiment in which only one variable is changed at a time.
8. Tool: Balance A tool used to measure the mass of objects.
9. Tool: Graduated Cylinder A beaker marked in intervals that is used to measure volume.
10. Tool: Microscope A tool used to produce magnified images of small objects.
11. Tool: Spring Scale A tool used to measure weight and force.
12. Tool: Thermometer A tool used to measure weight and force.
13. Tool: Test Tube A cylindrical tube, usually smaller than a beaker, that is open at one end and closed at the other.
14. Interpreting Data Use tables, charts and graphs to organize, interpret and present data.
15. Communicating Results Scientist draw conclusions about their hypothesis, then communicate the results of their experiments. It helps scientists learn from one another.
16. Collecting Data -observing -measuring -asking questions -performing experiment
17. Scientific Questions Questions that can be studied through observation, testing, and analysis.
18. Experimental Design Describes the steps that must be taken to conduct the test.
19. Chart/Table Summarizes data in rows and columns.
20. Diagram/Model Uses pictures to explain or show detail.
21. Bar Graph Uses bars to show the magnitude of the data.
22. Line Graph Uses a line to relate two sets of data or show how data change over time.
23. Circle Graph divides a circle into wedges to show how parts relate to the whole.
24. Flowchart Shows a series of boxes that show the order of steps or how different steps relate.
25. Scatter Plot Plots a series of point against two axes to show relationship between two or more sets of numerical data.
