What is A Hypothesis? A possible explanation for a set of observations or a possible answer to a scientific question.
What is an experiment? Something scientists design to test a hypothesis.
What are variables? All factors that can change in a experiment.
What is a controlled experiment? An experiment in which only one variable is changed at a time.
What is a independent variable? The variable that is purposely changed to test a hypothesis.
What is a dependent variable? The factor that may change in response to the independent variable.
what are Constants? All of the other variables, besides the independent and dependent variables.
What are tables and graphs? Tools that scientists use to organize and present data.
What types of ways can scientists collect data? Observing; measuring or counting; asking questions or performing an experiment.
What are circle graphs? Shows how a whole is divided into parts (or percentages of a whole)
what is a bar graph? Uses bars to compare different objects or events to one property.
What is a analysis? The breakdown of something that is complex into smaller parts in such a way that leads to a better understanding of the whole
What does it mean to classify? Grouping things together based on specific characteristics.
what is data? Information, measurements and materials gathered from observations that are used to help answer questions.
what is a experimental error? Incorrect data in an experiment that may result from a variety of causes.
what is an inference? A logical explanation or conclusion based on observations and/or facts.
What Does it mean to measure? To compare the characteristics of something (such as mass, length, volume) with a standard (such as grams, meters, liters).
What does observation mean? (1) Noticing objects or events using the five senses. (2) The data collected by using the five senses to learn about objects and events.
what is qualitative data? Data that is based on observable characteristics of things or events that can be collected using the five senses.
What is quantitative data? Data that is based on measurable characteristics of things or events such as mass, volume, length, and quantity.
What are repeated trials? Experimental tests done more than once.
What is science? The study of nature and the physical world using the methods of science, or a “special method of finding things out.
what is scientific law? A generalized pattern in nature.
what is scientific method? A causal explanation for generalized patterns in nature that is supported by much scientific evidence based on data collected using scientific methods.
what is a variation? Slight differences among objects, organisms or events that are all of the same basic type.
