QuestionAnswer
What are the five basic steps of scientific investigation in order? 1.Forming a hypothesis 2.Testing a hypothesis 3.Collect data 4.Interpreting data 5.Communicating results
What is a hypothesis? A possible explanation or tentative answer to the question.
What do scientist design to test hypotheses? Experiments
All factors that can change in an experiment is called what? Variables
A controlled experiment is what? An experiment in which only one variable is changed at a time.
What are some tools commonly used by scientists? Balance, graduated cylinder, microscope, spring scale, thermometer, and a test tube.
Scientists use tables, graphs, and charts for what? To organize, interpret, and present data.
Why do scientists communicate there results? To help learn from each other
The variable that is changed on purpose is called the what? The manipulated variable or the independent variable.
Manipulated variables are also called what? Independent variables
What may change in the response of the manipulated variable? The responding variable
Responding variables are also called what? The dependent variable
All of the other variables or factors are called what? Controlled variables or constants
What are a few ways you can collect data? -observing -measuring or counting -asking questions -performing an experiment
What is organizing data efficiently? A small space that allows a lot of information to be presented in a small space using tables.
Once information has been collected it should be what? Interpreted
Graphs are used for what? Present information visually
Circle graphs are best used for what? To show how a whole is divided in parts or percentages in a whole.
Bar graphs are best used for? Counting and to show how a number of objects or events compare in relationship to a single property?
The longer the bar in bar graphs the? The greater the amount of the object or frequency of the event.
Line graphs are best used to? To show a relationship between two measured quantities usually a trend over time.
The independent variable is placed where? On the x-axis
The dependent variable is placed where? On the y-axis
The dependent variable corresponds with the what? The independent variable

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
