Scientific Investigations Questions and Terms

QuestionAnswer
What is a possible explanation for a set of observations or a possible answer to a scientific question. hypothesis
All factors that can change in an experiment are called variables
An experiment in which only one variable is changed at a time is called a controlled experiment
When an experiment is done, what do scientists do with the data? They analyze it
What do scientists use to organize, present, and interpret data? tables, charts, and graphs
What do scientists do after gathering and interrupting data? They draw conclusions about their hypotheses
The variable that is purposely changed to test a hypothesis is called the manipulated variable
Manipulated variables are also sometimes called independent variables
The factor that may change in response to the manipulated variable is called the responding variable
Responding variables are also sometimes called dependent variables.
All of the other variables or factors, besides the manipulated and responding variables, are known as controlled variables or constants
Why do scientists carefully control their variables so they can understand how a particular variable affects the system as a whole
sometimes scientists collect data that is contradictory or unusual. Why should they do when this happens? the scientist should carefully go over the investigation’s design to make sure that there is only one manipulated variable in the experiment.
Collecting data can be done in many different ways, such as observing, measuring or counting, asking questions, performing an experiment
____ allow a lot of information to be presented in a small space Tables
_____are best used to show a relationship between two measured quantities, usually as a trend over time. Line graphs
____are best used for counting and to show how a number of objects or events compare in relationship to a single property. Bar graphs
Section sizes in a pie chart correspond to the amount of the whole that it represents or the percentage
Tables allow a lot of information to be presented in a small space by organizing data efficiently
While tables are used for organizing information, graphs are used to present information visually
biologists need to collect evidence through scientific investigations
what are the five basic steps most scientific investigations have? Forming a Hypothesis, Testing a Hypothesis,Data Collection, Interpreting Data, and Communicating Results
Communicating results helps scientists learn from one another
how does the variable in an experiment help scientists? the variable in a controlled experiment differs between the control group and the experimental groups
involve the senses of sight, hearing, touch, and smell observations
Balance, Graduated Cylinder, Microscope, Spring scale, Thermometer, Test tube are examples of what? tools that increase the power of their senses or make observations more precise

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
