QuestionAnswer
What is diffusion? The movement of a substance from an area of hich conc. to an area of low conc.
Which subtances can move in and out of cells vis diffusion? Dissolved food, Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide

What is a concentration gradient? The difference in concentration that exists between two regions and results in diffusion
What is osmosis? The movement of water

What is a concentration gradient? The difference in concentration that exists between two regions and results in diffusion
What is osmosis? The movement of water from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration through a semi-permeable membrane
What will an plant cell do when placed in pure water? Take on water by osmosis, swell up and become turgid
What will an animal cell do when place in pure water? Take on water by osmosis, swell up and burst
What will happen to a plant cell when it is placed in a concentrated salt or sugar solution? It will lose water by osmosis, the cell's contents will shrink and it will become plasmolysed.
What will happen to an animal cell when it is placed in a concentrated salt or sugar solution? It will lose water by osmosis and shrink
What does the cell wall do when osmosis occurs? Provides protection which stops it being badly affected by osmosis
When osmosis occurs, does the cell membrane off er the same protection as the cell wall does? No
What is a cell? The basic unit of living things
What is a unicellular organism? An organism made of only one cell
What is a multicellular organism? An organism made of many cells
One example of a stain Iodine solution
What 3 basic parts make up an animal cell? Cell Membrane, Cytoplasm,Nucleus
What 6 basic parts make up a plant cell? Cell Membrane, Cytoplasm, Nucleus, Cell Wall, Chloroplasts, Vacuole
Job of the cell membrane? Controls what enters and exits the cell
Job of the cytoplasm? The site of chemical reactions within the cell
Job of the nucleus? Controls the activities of the cell
Job of the cell wall? Made of cellulose, gives plant cell its shape
Job of the chloroplasts? Contain chlorophyll, absorbs sunlight
Job of vacuole? Stores cell sap
What is mitosis? The process in which the contents of the nucleus are copied. It is usually followed by cell division.
What are the five stages of mitosis? Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase.
What is a chromosome complement? The total number of chromosomes a cell posseses.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
