Earthscience vocabulary words

QuestionAnswer
Lithosphere- The outermost solid layer of the Earth.
Hydrosphere- The part of the Earth that is made out of water.
Atmosphere- The air and gases that are around us.
Biosphere- The Lithosphere, Hydrosphere and the Atmosphere together.
Convection currents- Currents in the Earth's mantle that are moving the plate tectonics.
Plate tectonics- A theory that Earth's crust and the top part of the mantle are broken down into pieces that float on the mantle.
Oceanic crust- The land below the water in the oceans.
Continental crust- The crust/land in which we live and walk on.
Seafloor spreading- A theory that new seafloor is formed when the magma from the mantle is forced upward toward the surface.
Convergent boundaries- When two boundaries collide.
Divergant boundaries- When two boundaries go away from each other.
Transform boundaries- When two boundaries move side by side.
Latitude- Distance from north to south of the equater.
Longitude- Distance from west to east of the prime meridian.
Lava- Molten rock on Earth.
Magma- Molten rock inside Earth.
Volume- How much space an object takes up.
