| cytoplasm | contains the things that the cell needs to carry out its life purpose |
| chloroplasts | the special parts in plant cells that trap the sun's energy |
| genus | a group of closely related living things |
| species | a group opf similar organisms that can produce offspring that can also produce offspring |
| vertebrates | animals with a backbone |
| invertebrates | animals without a backbone |
| photosynthesis | the process of making food (sugar) |
| chlorophyll | the substance in plants that makes them green, captures energy from sunlight |
| sepal | small green leaves below the petals, cover and protect the flower as it grows |
| pistil | small knob like structures |
| staman | small stalks surrounding the pistil |
| ovary | the thick bottom part of the pistil |
| fertilization | the sperm and egg cells combine |
| dormant | a state of rest |
| ecosystem | all the living and nonliving things in an environment |
| population | all the members of one species that live within an area of an ecosystem |
| community | different populations that interact with each other in the same area |
| niche | the specific role an organism has in its habitat |
| herbivores | consumers that get energy by eating only plants |
| carnivores | consumers that get energy by eating only other animals |
| omnivores | consumers that eat both plants and animals |
| decomposers | organisms that live and grow by breaking down the waste and remains of dead plants and animals to obtain nutrients |
| competition | two or more living things in an ecosystem using the same limited resources |
| parasite | an organism that lives on or in another organism, helping itself by hurting the other organism |
| host | an organism that is harmed by a parasite |
| succession | gradual change from one community of organisms to another |
| extinct | no longer living, as an entire species, or no longer active, as a volcano |
| endangered | a species whose population has been reduced to such small numbers that it is in danger of becoming extinct |
| hazardous waste | substances that are very harmful to humans and other organisms |
| voluntary muscles | muscles that you can control |
| involuntary muscles | muscles that you cannot control |
| neuron | basic working unit of the nervous system |
| pathogens | organisms that cause disease |
| infectious disease | a disease that can pass from one organism to another |
| immune system | the organs in your body that defend against diseases |
| vaccine | an injection of dead or weakened pathogens that causes you to be immune to a disease |
| evaporation | the change from liquid water to water vapor |
| condensation | the process of water vapor, a gas, changing to a liquid |
| precipitation | any form of water falling from the air to earth's surface |
| humidity | the amount of water vapor in the air |
| front | the boundary across which two different air masses touch another |
| meteorologist | a scientist who studies and measures weather conditions |
| barometer | a tool that measures air pressure |
| anemometer | a tool that measures wind speed |
| wind vane | a tool that shows the direction from which the wind is blowing |
