The Big Bang Theory This is the theory that states how the universe formed, Began as matter in a highly condensed state with high amounts of radiation, This matter exploded and expanded 15-20 billion years ago and still is
Red shift vs. Blue Shift The red shirt is shifting or moving away; blue shift is coming toward the Earth.
The doppler effect change in wavelength of light as an object is moving toward or away from you
Dark matter accounts for most of the mass in the universe, it is invisible, it does not give off, reflect or absorb any light
Spiral Galaxies Spiral shaped with normal spirals and barred spirals Ex. Milky Way (ours)
Elliptical Galaxies disk shape (ellipse), no arms, similar to a football in shape
Irregular Galaxies no distinct shape
Open Universe as galaxies continue racing outward, the universe will expand. This is also known as an “eternal universe” it leads to total emptiness
Closed Universe Expansion of universe will slow and it will contract or pull back together. Eventually all the matter and energy would contract into a single ball./
Parts of the Milky Way Nucleus: bulge in center of galaxy Halo: Spherical area around star masses outside of nucleus,oldest stars found here Spiral Arms:Contain youngest stars, our solar system is located in an arm Rotates counter-clockwise around nucleus
