earthquakes
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| plate | a large section of earth's crust and rigid upper mantle that moves around ont he athensosphere |
| fault | surface along which rock's move when they pass their elastic limit and break |
| earthquake | vibrations produced when rock break along a fault |
| normal fault | break in rock cuased by tension forces, where rock above the fault surface moves down relative to the rock below the fault surface |
| reverse fault | break in rock caused by compressive forces, where rock above the fault surface moves upward relative to the rock below the surface |
| strike-slip fault | break in fault cuased by shear forcs, where rocks move past each other without much wertical movement |
| wave | rythmic movement that carries enrgy through matter or space |
| seismic wave | wave generated by an earthquake |
| focus | in an earthquake, the piont below earth's surface enrgy is released in the form of seismic wave |
| primary wave | wave that moves rock particles back-and-forth in the same direction that the wave travels |
| secondary wave | wave that moves rock particles at right angles to the direction of the wave |
| surface wave | wave that moves rock particles up-and-down in a backward motion and side-to-side in a swayin motion |
| epicenter | point of earth's surface directly above an earthquakes focus |
| seismograph | instument used to register and time each earthquake |
