| plate | a large section of earths crust & rigid upper mantle that moves around on the athenosphere |
| earthquakes | vibrations produced when rocks break along the fault |
| normal fault | break in rock caused by forces, where rock above the fault surface moves down relative to the rock below the fault surface |
| strike-slip fault | break in rock caused by shear forces, where rocks move past each other without much vertical movement |
| reverse fault | break in rock caused by compressive forces, where rock above the fault surface moves upward realtive to the rock below the fault surface |
| wave | rhythmatic movement that carries energy through matter & space |
| seismic wave | wave generated by an earthquake |
| surface wave | sesimic wave that moves rock particles up & down in a backward rolling motion & side to side in a swaying motion |
| secondary wave | seismic wave that moves rock particles at a right angel to the dirrection of the wave |
| seismicograph | intrument used to register earthquake waves & record the time that each wave arrives |
| focus | in an earthquake, the point below earths surface where the energy is released in the form of seismic waves |
| epic center | point on earths surface directly above an earthquakes focus |
