Reading

Text Features

QuestionAnswer
Title Introduces the topic (or main idea) of the passage.
Heading Description of what will be read in a section.
Captions Words underneath a picture or photograph that explain what it is or is about.
Graphs/Charts/Maps Visual information to help with understanding.
Diagrams Drawing of the parts of something.
Bold-faced text Dark words, calls attention to important words or terms;also shows which words can be found in the glossary.
Italics Words that are slanted; calls attention to important words or terms; these words can be found in the dictionary.
Subheadings Under the heading. These break the information into smaller parts.
Underlining Lines under words or phrases that draw attention to important information.
Sidebars Information to the side of the text that explains in more detail.
Numbered or Bulleted Lists Organize information
Topic & Summary Sentences Explain text and check for understanding.
Table of Contents Located before the text. Helps locate information.
