| Focus | the area along a fault where slippagefirst occurs initiating an earthquake. The deeper the focus the less damage. |
| Epicenter | the part on the earths surface directly above the focus of an earthquake. |
| Primary waves | the first to arrive , can travel through any material. |
| Secondary waves | cant travel through liquids |
| Surface waves | do the most damage. |
| Seismology | studies earthquakes using seismographs. 3 seismographs are necessary in order to locate the epicenter. |
| Richter scale | measures magnitude- (the amount of energy released). We cant predict the amount of damage an earthquake will cause. This depends on several things such as physical properties of rock, population in the area, buildings etc. |
