Escape from Sobibor study guide

Schlomo and Moses are brothers-goldsmiths. Know how they find out about their parenst and sister's death. Moses is sent to the area with the showers and sees naked prisoners lined up and the dead being carried out. He hears the screams, etc.
How did the Nazi's keep escape attempts to a minimum at Sobibor? When other group of 13 tried to escape, when captured, they had to choose 13 others to die with them.
Many Jews began to question or doubt this... their faith/belief/forgiveness in God
Know what happens to the characters after the escape.
Wagoner: found in South America and mysteriously stabbed to death.
Schlomo: fighter against Nazi's in Poland; moved to Brazil, married with 2 sons
Moses: No record of what happened to him
Esther (Leon's cousin): Lived in New Jersey; testified at many trials against war criminals.
Sasha (Russian Lieutenant): survived, lived in Russia, testified against Ukranian guards from Sobibor
Luka: Whereabouts unknown; Sasha tried to locate her but could not. The shirt she gave him is in a museum.
Leon: Opened business in Poland and was later killed by his own countrymen because he was Jewish.
Approximately how many Jews died at Sobibor? 250,000 (quarter of a million)
Toive: shot by Polish farmer for his money, but survives, Married with 3 kids in California. Returns to Sobibor every year.
What role does Toive play during the escape? the messenger
Be able to recall 4 ways the Nazi's were cruel to the prisoners: Beating Herschel (serving soup), Killed Niomi and baby, Killed old man who threw sand, Make other prisoners choose their peers to die with them.
How did Leon find out about the murder of his wife and child? He sees their clothes in the laundry.
Who are in charge of the Kapos and other Jews? Oberkapos
Approximately how many prisoners escaped?, How many of those who escaped survived? 300 (about 1/2 of the total prison population); 50 escapees survived.
The following people died during the escape: Good Oberkapo, Samuel (Leon's good friend-shoemaker), Schlomo's girlfriend.
What happened to Itzhak and Ada? Married and moved to Israel.
Chiam and Selma(Holland dancer): Survived and moved to Connecticut, have children.
Why did the Nazi's need for rigid scheduling and efficiency help the chances for escape? The prisoners knew what the SS did everyday...knew their schedules.
Why was escape at 4pm significant? Would be dusk soon and give them a head-start in the dark.
What date did the escape occur? October 14, 1943
Know Luka's character: lied about being a seamstress, eventually chosen to tend rabbits, falls in love with Sasha.
Know details of the escape plan: 4 pm, cut electricity, timing and luck while Wagoner went away for 3 days, courage, killing SS one at a time.
Know Herschel's character: Food server who is beaten, but gets revenge when he kills the SS who beat him.
Where was Sobibor located? Central Poland, escape was difficult, forest, landmines, Ukranian guards, barbed wire.
Know about Leon's character: Talks Sasha into allowing all 600 prisoners attempt to escape, doesn't know if the Jews will be able to kill SS, tells Jews to bear witness and tell the world about Sobibor.
An Oberkapo sees a kapo stealing, while Toive sees this, too. The kapo is hung. Why is this significant? Toive can be trusted, the Oberkapo cannot.
Know about the Good Kapo's kindness and helpfulness with the escape
What are the prisoners advised to tell the SS when they arrive at Sobibor? They have a skill, they are skilled workers with a trade.
Know this phrase: They work to survive; They survive for Revenge.
Niomi is hiding her baby. Who finds it and what happens? Wagoner finds it, gives Niomi option to give him the baby and live. She refuses and shoots them both.
Escape from Sobibor known for... biggest, most successful escape, camp closed after escape.
