Cell Physiology

test 2

QuestionAnswer
Name the three types of functional cell-cell junctions. occulding, adhesive, communicating
What is an occulding junction? functions to seal cells together in an epithelial sheet
What is an adhesive junction? mechanically attach cells to one another or to the ECM
What is a communicating junction? allows direct passage of chemical or electrical signals from cell to cell.
Name a type of occulding junction. Tight junction
What is the function of a tight junction? functions to form a seal between adjacent cells and also define the apical and basal sides of an epithelial cell
3 important things about the tight junction. direct connections between PMs of adjacent cells formed by membrane proteins important in intestine, bladder, glands segregates active and passive glucose transporters for directional glucose uptake from the lumen of the gut.
3 important things about the adhesive junction. holds cells in fixed position prominent in epithelial tissues associated with cytoskeleton
What 2 junctions rely on cadherins proteins? Adherens and desmosome junctions
What are cadherins? cross the plasma membrane and are linked to the cytoskeleton by linker proteins
Function of adherens junctions. join actin bundles in one cell to actin bundles in adjoining cell
Function of desmosome junction. link intermediate filaments of adjoining cell
Define plaque. dense mixture of attachment proteins to which cadherins and keratin filaments are anchored to
What is a hemidesomosome? links keratin filaments to the basal lamina.
Type of communicating junction. gap junction
2 important functions of gap junctions. cell can regulate the opening of the channel aqueous channel that forms between adjacent cells
What is a plasmoesmata? in plants: is a type of gap junction

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
