Mitosis
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What are the four phases of mitosis? | Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase |
| What happens during mitosis? | The nuclear material divides. |
| What happens during prophase? | 1. Centrioles move to opposite sides of the nucleus. 2. Chromatin thickens and coils forming chromosomes. 3. The nuclear membrane disappears. 4. Spindle fibers stretch from one centriole to the other. |
| What happens during metaphase? | Sister chromatids line up single file in the middle of the cell. |
| What happens during anaphase? | Sister chromatids separate and move to opposite poles of the cell by shortening the spindle fibers. |
| What happens during telophase? | 1. Spindle fibers disappear. 2. Chromosomes uncoil and return to chromatin form. 3. A new nuclear membrane forms. |
| When does cytokinesis occur? | Cytokinesis starts during telophase and ends after telophase. |
| What happens during cytokinesis in an animal cell? | The cell membrane pinches inward dividing the cytoplasm. |
| What happens during cytokinesis in a plant cell? | A cell plate is laid down between the 2 cells and a cell membrane forms inside each new cell. |
| What results from mitosis? | Two daughter cells, smaller than the parent cell, but with the exact same kinds & numbers of chromosomes as the parent cell. |
