How do you determine absolute age of a rock? What is the primary method? Measuring radioactive decay of element isotopes
Each change in era is represented by what primary event? The disappearance of organisms from the geologic record
What is the Theory of Uniformatarianism? Geologic processes we see today were also at work in the past.
What does the relationship among rock layers tell geologists (think about James Hutton…) They get a sense of the history of the area they are investigating.
Trilobites were originally found in what type of environment? An environment, that at one time, was under water.
Is volcanic activity present more now, or in earth’s history? Volcanic activity was more common in the past than it is today.
In what era did a real diversity of life show up? Phanerozoic eon.
What are the ideal conditions needed for fossilization to occur? rapid burial and hard body parts
When anazlyzing types of fossils found…what information do these fossils provide? Evidence of the environment of the past in the area where the fossil was found
In an earlier unit, we learned about a certain theory (what is it?) and it explains why we find similar species on different continents…? Theory of Continental Drift
Understand the “law of superposition” (What is it?) and how it is represented in a diagram. This law refers to the idea that sediment is deposited from oldest to youngest.
