Vocab terms and definitions

Evidence Anything that can be used to prove the facts in a court of law. Evidence can be something like clothing, eyewitness testimony, tire tracks, or DNA.
Expert Witness Someone who testifies in court as a qualified expert in a particular subject area.
Forensic Science The application of scientific knowledge and techniques to enforcing the law. Forensic scientists use logic and carefully follow scientific steps in order to solve issues related to criminal and civil law.
Civil Matter Legal proceedings that use the court system but are not punishable under criminal law, typically involve things like contracts, real estate, and other business matters.
Criminal Matter Legal proceedings that use the court systems to enforce criminal law include things like burglary, arson, and homicide.
Criminalistics the application of forensic science to solving crimes, includes many different forensic specialties.
