Genetics VocabularyDefinition
heredity passing traits from one generation to the next
DNA deoxyribonucleic acid; in nucleus
gene code for a specific genetic trait
chromosome section of the DNA that is visible during mitosis/meiosis
homozygous recessive code for two recessive genes (gg)
homozygous dominant code for two dominant genes (GG)
heterozygous code for one dominant and one recessive gene (Gg)
dominant trait trait that will be expressed regardless of the second gene in the pair; dominant gene expressed in homozygous dominant (GG) and heterozygous (Gg)
recessive trait trait that can ONLY be expressed when there are homozygous recessive genes
genotype genetic pair that identifies a specific trait; examples are GG, gg, Gg
phenotype physical trait that is expressed by a gene; example = brown hair
sex-linked trait any traits whose genes are found on the X-chromosome but not the Y-chromosome
codominance heterozygous gene (Gg) where both traits are expressed independantly; example G= green, g=yellow ---> trait expressed is green and yellow stripes
incomplete dominance heterozygous gene (Bb) where the traits are blended together; example B= blue, b=yellow ---> trait expressed is green
