Chapter Four's Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
What is Passive transport? Movement across the cell membrane that doesnt require energy.
What is a Concentration Gradient? A difference in concentration of a substance across a space.
What is an Equilibrium? A condition in which the concentration of a substance is equal throughout a space.
What is Diffusion? The changing of a substance from a high concentration level to a lower one.
What is Osmosis? The diffusion of water across a permeable membrane.
What is a Hyperttonic Solution? A solution which causes cells to decrease in size.
What is a Hypotonic Solution? A solution that causes the cell to swell up.
What is an Isotonic Solution? A solution that doesn't cause the cell to change in volume.
What is an Ion Channel? A transport molecule with a polar pore in which ions can pass.
What is a Carrier Protien? They carry things from the outside of a cell to the inside.
What is a Facilitated Diffusion? A type of passive transport.
What is an Active Transport? The transportation of a substance across the cell membrane against it's concentration gradient.
What is a Sodium Potassium Pump? It transports three sodium ions out of the cell and two potassium ions into the cell.
What is Endocytosis? The movement of a substance into a cell.
What is Exocytosis? The movement of a substance out of a cell.
What are Receptor Proteins? Proteins that bind to a specific signal molecule.
What is a Second Messenger? Acts as a signal molecule in the cytoplasm.
