Pressure (p) limited to media with no or very low shear resistance (fluids)
Stress (sigma) used when dealing with media with a minimum of shear resistance (rocks)
Shear resistance the resistance that a medium has to parallel but opposite forces sliding against it
Body Forces A force that affects the entire volume of a rock, the outside as well as the inside. example: gravity, magnetic forces
Surface force a type of force that acts on surfaces only. When one body pushes or pulls another body, the force acting across the contact area is a surface force.
