Medications we need to know for test 3 and 4

SUFFIX for ACE Inhibitors? -pril (The "prils")
SUFFIX for Beta Blockers -lol (The "LOLs")
SUFFIX for Calcium Channel Blockers -dipine in the generic name; or will have "card" somewhere in the commercial drug's name
How do ACE Inhibitors work (their action)? What Medical DX's do they treat? Inhibits Angiotensin Converting Enzyme which stops Angiotensin II creation. Treats Hypertension and CHF
Name some side effects of ACE Inhibitors Hypotension, Kidney Failure, Angioedema (facial edema/swelling), Dry hacking cough
How do Calcium Channel Blockers work (their action)? What Medical DX's do they treat? Blocks Calcium Channels which are on the heart and blood vessels. Treats Hypertension and Angina (chest pain)
Name some side effects of Calcium Channel Blockers Hypotension, Constipation, Peripheral Edema
Name some Nursing Implications for Calcium Channel Blockers (what should you keep an eye on?) Monitor B/P, Bowels (because of Constipation), Edema
How do Beta Blockers work (their action)? What Medical DX's do they treat? Blocks the Sympathetic Nervous System which DECREASES everything (lowers B/P, pulse). Treats Hypertension, Angina, Cardiac Arrhythmias
Name some side effects of Beta Blockers Bradycardia, Low B/P, Depression, Lethargy
Name some Nursing Implications for Beta Blockers (what should you keep an eye on?) Monitor HR, B/P, CNS side effects
Which type of Cardiac Med must you taper or "ween" the patient off of? Beta Blockers - if D/Ced abruptly can cause rebound Hypertension!
