cell organelles
What are the functions of the cell organelles?
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | The control center of the cell. Contains the DNA. |
| mitochondria | Powerhouse of the cell. Makes energy for the cell. |
| chloroplast | plants only. Helps make the energy using sunlight. |
| ER | Transportation system in the cell. Smooth will not have ribosomes on it, and Rough will have the ribosomes on it. |
| Ribosomes | make the proteins |
| Golgi body | Packages up proteins and other molecules so they can be moved around the cell. |
| Lysosome | Breaks down and helps digest materials that are not needed in the cell. |
| Cytoplasm | Material inside the cell, a gel like substance. |
| cell wall | only in plant cells. Used for support and protection. |
| cell membrane | in both plant and animal cells. Allows materials to pass in and out of the cell and acts as a barrier. |
| Vacuole | Usually large in plant cells. May contain water foods or waste. |
| cell theory | All living things are composed of cells. Cells are the units of function and structure of living organisms. Cells come from pre-existing cells. |
| Nucleolus | produces ribosomes |
