parts of the cell and other related terms

QuestionAnswer
Robert Hooke Discovered Cells
Matthias Schleiden Discovered that all plants were composed of cells
Thomas Schwan Realized that all living things were made of cells
Cell Theory 1)cells are the basic unit of life, 2)all cells come from pre-existing cells, 3)all living organisms are made of cells
Prokaryote Cells with no membrane bound nucleus or organelles ex. Bacteria
Eukaryote Cells with a true nucleus and organelles ex. Plants and Animals
Unicellular Organisms with only one cell
Multicellular Organisms with multiple cells
Cell or Plasma Membrane Double membrane that surrounds and protects the cell
Microvilli fingerlike projections from the cell membrane that help the cell obtain food
Cytoplasm or Cytosol Cell fluid, saline solution, cushions organelles and protects cell
Centrioles used during cell division, they move chromatin and chromatin threads during division
Vacuole Stores water, food, and waste
Golgi apparatus or body processes and packages proteins
Mitochondrion site of cellular respiration, powerhouse of the cell, place where energy is released for the cell
Cristae Folds in the mitochondrion
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum transport substances in and out of the cell
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum has ribosomes attached, transports substances in and out of cell.
Microtubules the cytoskeleton of the cell, provide support for the cell
Lysosome contains digestive enzymes to help detoxify the cell
Nucleus control center of the cell, controls all cellular functions
Nuclear membrane a membrane which surrounds and protects the nucleus
Nuclear Pores small openings in the nucleus which allow things to enter or exit the nucleus
Nucleolus contains RNA, makes ribosomes
Nucleoplasm fluid in the nucleus which cushions and protects the nucleolus
Chromatin threads found in the nucleus, contain DNA
Plastid Found in plant cells, contain pigment
Chloroplast site of photosynthesis, contains the pigment chlorophyll
Cell Wall made of cellulose, supports the plant cell, outside of cell membrane
Large Central Vacuole Large fluid filled vacuole in plants, maintains the cells shape by using pressure
Turgor Pressure the pressure exerted on the cell membrane/wall by the central vacuole
Cillia hair-like movement structure
Flagella Tail like movement structure
Plasmolysis process in plant cells where the cell membrane separates from the cell wall
Cytolysis cell bursting from too much water entering
Selectively Permeable Allows only some materials to enter
DNA deoxyribonucleic acid, double helix, contains ATCG, contains deoxyribose sugar, is the instructions for your body
RNA ribonucleic acid, single helix, contains AUCG, contains ribose sugar, is a copy made from DNA which tells your body how to make proteins
Hypertonic solution concentration of water is lower outside the membrane than inside
Hypotonic solution concentration of water is higher outside the membrane than inside
Isotonic equal concentrations on both sides of membrane
Solute dissolved particle
Solvent substance that does the dissolving
Solution combination of a solute and a solvent

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
