| siesmograph | an instrument that detects, records, and measures the vibration produced by and earthquake |
| siesmogram | the record made by a siemograph; the paper on which an earthquake waves are recorded |
| aftershock | an earthquake wave that follows the main shock |
| epicenter | the point on the surface of the earth directly above an earthquake |
| plate tectonic theroy | the lithosphere is broken into segments that float ont the athenosphere, and that interjections amoung these plates are associated with earthquakes and volcanic activity and form mid-ocean ridges, trenches, mountians, and chains of volcanic islands |
| mid-ocean ridge | a mountian like landform that develops when places sperate and new ocean lithosphere forms |
| crust | earth's outer layer, the coolest and least dense layer |
| oceanic crust | lies beneath the ocean |
| continental crust | lies mostly beneath land, the thickest when under mountians |
| mantle | the layer of the earth beneath the crust; makes up about 83% of earth's interrior |
| outer core | made of iron, sulfur, and oxygen a liquid layer |
| inner core | made of iron and nickel: it is solid |
