TheCellOrganelles

cell organelles for biology

QuestionAnswer
Has a nucleiod region which contains the chromatin (DNA & Protein) Prokaryotes
Form : Rigid, covering the cell membrane, made of cellulose in plants and algae(protists), made of chitin in fungi, made of peptidoglycan in bacteria. Function : protection, gives shape. Found in : plants, bacteria, fungi, some protists. Cell Wall
Form : thin double layer made of lipids (fats) and proteins surrounding the cell. Function : controls what gets in and out. Protects cell from enviroment. Found in : all cells. Cell Membrane
Form : jelly-like substance inside the cell, surrounding organelles, between nucleus and membrane Function : cushions and protects organelles. Found in : all cells. Cytoplasm
Form : large round organelle with a nuclear membrane, nuclear pores, chromatin (chromosomes (DNA & protein)), nucleolus (makes ribosomes) Function : holds chromosomes (DNA & protein) Found in : only eukaryotic cells Nucleus
Form : small round organelle in the cytoplasm and on the surface of the ER (endoplasmic reticulum) Function : makes protein molecules using instructions from the DNA (combines amino acids) Found in : all cells Ribosome
Form : bean-shaped, with inner & outer membranes Function : supply energy to the cell by breaking down sugar molecules by cellular respiration. Found in : all eukaryotic cells Mitochondria
Form : a folded membrane of tubes stretching between the nuclear membrane and the cell membrane Function : transports proteins, fats, and oils to where they are needed in the cell Found in : all eukaryotic cells Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
ER w/o ribosomes Smooth ER
ER w/ ribosomes Rough ER
Form : folded membranes with vessicles (compartments) pinching off at the sides Function : Processes, packages and ships molecules Found in : eukaryotic cells Golgi Apparatus
Form : like a vacuole, a membrane-bound compartment Function : digestion, breaks down carbohydrates, proteins, and lipid molecules into smaller molecules Found in : animal cells Lysosome
Form: membranebound compart. in cytoplasm. Large¢ral in PC, yet small&numerous in AC Func: stores molecules, in plants: provide support through turgor pressure and stores waste products in anim Found: eukary cells (critical in plant, temp in animal) Vacuole
Form: beanshaped w/ mult stacks of disks that contain pigment chlorophyll, green. Func.: to carry out photosynthesis Found: plants and come protists(those that carry out photosynthesis) Some prokar. can also photosyn. using a membrane called a thylakoid Chloroplast
Has own DNA, separate from that of the nucleus. Mitochondria and Chloroplast
Form : whip-like tail. Found in : some bacteria, some protists, animal sperm cells. Flagellum/Flagella
Form : tiny, hair-like coverings on the surface of a cell. Found in : Bacteria, protists, animal epithelial cells (cells that surround organs inside and out) Cilia

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
