QuestionAnswer
Why is fresh water scarce? Fresh water is scarce because 97% of of the water on Earth is salt water.
Where do fresh water come from? Fresh water mostly comes from the form of ice.
Why do water shortages occur? Water shortages occur because the process of the water cycle do not produce enough water in useable form to meet humans needs.
When do water shortages become a problem? They become a problem when drought occurs.
What wastes can end up in water? Waste that end up in water are: households, industries, and mining.
What is a major pollutant from agriculture? Pesticides.
What are some major pollutants from industry and mining? Chemicals, metal wastes, heat oil, and gasoline.
Why is heat considered a pollutant? Heat in considered a pollutant because heated water can kill living organisms in a body of water.
What does keeping water clean require? Keeping water clean requires proper sewage treatment, the reduction of pollutants, and a effective cleanup of oil and gasoline spills.
What is most water pollution caused by? water pollution is mostly caused by human activities.
What can industries can do to keep water clean? To keep water clean they can reduce and recycle their waste.
What should you never dos with hazardous chemicals? You should never pour them down the drain.
What happens if pollution reaches ground water? It may be carried far away.
groundwater water stored in underground layers if soil and rock.
pollutant a substance that causes pollution.
sewage the water human wastes that are washed down sinks, toilets, and showers.
pesticides a chemical that kills crop-destroying organisms.
sediment particles of rock and sand.
What is the major source of smog? the major source is emmissions from vehicles.
What are the gases that are the source of smog? hydrocarbons and nitrogen.
What does hydrocarbons and nitrogen react with? They react with sunlight from the ozone layer which turns into smog.
When ozone is harmful when it is close to the Earth's surface. Ozone in the upper atmosphere filters________. ultraviolet radiation.
What is acid rain caused by? It caused by emmissions from some power plants and factories.
True or False: Some indoor pollutants only affect people who are sensitive to them. True
What are some sources of indoor air pollution? Some examples are dust, pet hair, glues, and cleaning supplies.
When does carbon monoxide form? Co2 forms when wood, coal, or gas are incompletely burned.
What is the major cause of the ozone hole? The major cause is a group called CFC's or chlorofluorocarbons.
How can radon enter homes? Radon can enter homes by they enter through cracks in basement floors and walls.
Why is carbon monoxide hard to detect? It is hard to detect because it is colorless and odorless.
What is the key to reducing air pollution? The key is to control emissions.
pollution control devices such as a catalytic converter control emissions from cars and trucks.
emissions pollutants that are released into the air.
photochemical smog a thick, brownish haze formed when certain gases react with sunlight.
ozone a toxic form of oxygen
