Chapter 7

QuestionAnswer
Cell The cell is the functional basic unit of life.
Cell Theory Cell theory refers to the idea that cells are the basic unit of structure in every living thing.
Nucleus A large membrane-enclosed structure that contains the cells DNA.
Eukaryote Cells that have nuclei.
Prokaryote Cells that do not contain nuclei.
Organelle Little organs.
Cytoplasm Portion of the cell outside of the nucleus.
Nuclear Envelopment Surrounds the nucleus.
Chromatin DNA bound to protein.
Chromosomes Thread like structures that contain the DNA.
Nucleolus Where the assembly of ribosomes begins.
Ribosomes Small particles of RNA
Endoplasmic Reticulum Where lipids components of the cells membrane are assembled.
Golgi Apparatus Stack of closely apposed membranes.
Lysosomes Small organelles filled with enzymes.
Vacuoles Store materials.
Mitochondria Converts energy stored in food into compounds that the cell can use.
Chloroplasts Capture energy from sunlight.
Cytoskeleton Gives cells their shape.
Centrioles Orginize cell divsion.
Cell Membrane A thin wall that holds the cell together.
Cell Wall Layer around the membrane.
Lipid Bilayer A double layered sheet near membrane.
Concentration The mass of solute in a given volume of solution.
Diffusion A more concentrated area moves its particles to a less concentrated area.
Equilibrium When the concentration is the same.
Osmosis The diffusion through water.
Isotonic Same strength.
Hypertonic Above strength.
Hypotonic Below strength.
Facilitated Diffusion Diffusion of glucose across a membrane.
Active Transport Opposite of diffusion.
Endocytosis Taking materials into the cell.
Phagocytosis Extentions of cytoplasm surround a particle and package it in the vacuole.
Pincytosis tiny pockets form around the membrane and fill with water.
Exocytosis Vacuole forces particles out of it.
Cell Specialization Cells develop to do differant tasks.
Tissue Group of similiar cells.
Organ Many groups of tissues form an Organ.
Organ System Organs work together.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
