Chapter 7 Cells

QuestionAnswer
cell The basic units of life.
cell theory the fundamental concept of biology -All living things are composed of cells -Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things
nucleus a large membrane-enclosed structure that contains the cells genetic material in the form of DNA
Eukaryotes cells that contain nuclei
prokaryotes cells that do not contain nuclei
organelles act as small organs
cytoplasm the portion of the cell outside the nucleus
nuclear envelope the portion of the cell that surrounds the nucleus
chromatin the granular material you can see in the nucleus
chromosomes when a cell divides, chromatin condenses to form chromosomes
nucleolus inside the nucleus where the assembly of ribosomes begins
ribosomes small particles of RNA and proteins found throughout the cytoplasm
endoplasmic reticulum the internal membrane system where lipid components of the cell membrane are assembled along with proteins and other materials that are exported from the cell
golgi apparatus To modify, sort, and package proteins and other materials from the endoplasmic reticulum for storage in the cell or secretion outside the cell
lysosomes small organelles filled with enzymes. Digests and breaks down lipids, carbs and proteins into small molecules that can be used by the rest of the cell.
vacuoles some cells contain sac like structures that store materials such as water, salts, proteins, and carbohydrates
mitochondria organelles that convert chemical energy stored in food into compounds that are more convienient for a cell to use.
chloroplasts organelles that apture the energy from sunlight and convert it into chemical energy in a process called photosynthesis
cytoskeleton eukaryotic cells are given their shape and internal organization by a supporting structure
centrioles located near the nucleus and help to organize cell division

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
