QuestionAnswer
cells basic unit of life
cell theory fundelamental concept of biology
nucleus large membrane enclosed structure that contains a cell genetic material in a form
Eukaryotes cells that contain a nuclei
Prokaryotes cells that dont have a nuclei
organelles little organs
cytoplasm portion of the cell outside of the nucleus
nuclear envelope surronds the nucleus composed of two membranes
chromatin granular material you can see inside of the nucleus
chromosomes are thread like structures that contain the genetic info that is passed from one generation of cells to the next
nucleolus where the assembly of ribiosomes begin
ribosomes are small rna and protein found throughout the cytoplasm
endoplasmic reticulum is the site where lipid componets of the cell membrane are assembled
golgi apparatus is to motify, sort and package proteins
lysosomes are small organelles filled with enzymes
vacuoles is saclike structure that stores materials such as water, proteins and carbohydrates
mitochondria are organelles that convert chemical energy stored in food into compounds that are more convenient for the cell to use
chloroplasts are organelles that capture energy form sunlight and convert it into chemical energy in a process callled photosynethesis
cytoskeleton a network of protein filaments that helps the cell to maintain its shape
centrioles is located near the nucleus and help organize cell division
cell membrane a thin flexible barrier that surrounds all cells
cell wall a strong supporting layer around the membrane
lipid bilayer is a composition of nearly all cell membranes is a double layered sheet
concentration a solution is the mass of solute in a given volume od solution
diffusion is whern particles move from more concentrated are to a less concentrated
equilibrium when the concentration of the solute is the same throughout a system
osmosis is the diffusion of water through a selectively premeable membrane
isotonic same strength is when water and sugar will be the same on both sides of the membrane
hypertonic more concentrated sugar solution is above strenght
hypotonic dilute sugar solution ore below strenght
facilitated diffusion is the diffusion of glucose across the membrane
active transport cell have to move materials in the opposite direction aggainst a concentration difference
endocytosis is the process of of taking material into the cell by unfolding
phagocytosis "cell eating" extensions of cytoplasm surrounded a particle and package it within a food vacuole
pinocytosis many cells take up liquid from the surrounding environment tiny pockets from along the cell membrane fill with liquid
exocytosis the membrane of the vaculoe surrounding the material fuses with the cell membrane
cell specialization communication and cooperation among cells
tissue is a group of similar cells that preform a particualr function
organ is many groups of tissues that work together
organ system a group of organs that work together to preform a specific function

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
