Cell Structure 2

QuestionAnswer
What is the cell membrane? A flexible barrier that surrounds cells
What is the cell wall? A strong supporting layer around the membrane
What is the lipid barrier? The compostion of nearly all cell membranes that is a double layered sheet
What is concentration? The mass of a solute in a given volume of a solution
What is diffusion? When particles tend to move from an area where there is more concentration to an area where there is less concentration
What is the equilibrium? When the concentration of a solute is the same throughout a system
What is osmosis? The diffusion of water through a slectively permeable membrane
What is isotonic? When two solutions are the same strength
What is hypertonic? When one soluton is stronger than the other
What is hypotonic? When one solution is weaker than the other
what is facilitated diffusion? Molecules that cannot diffuse across the cell membrane's lippid bilayer on their own move through protein channels instead
What is active transport? when cells move materials against a concetration difference
what is endocytosis? the process of taking material in to the cell by means of infoldings of the cell membrane
What is phagocytosis? When extensions of a cytoplasm surround a particle and package it within a food vacuole
Whta is pinocytosis? When tiny pockets form along the cell membrane, filled with liquid, and pinch of to form vacuoles within the cell
What is exocytosis? when many cells also release large amounts of material from the cell
WhAT IS CELL SPECIALIZATION? When cells throughout an organism can develop in different ways to perform different tasks
What is an organ? When many groups of tissue work together
What is an organ system? A group of organs that work together to perform a specific function
What is tissue? A group of similar cells that perform a particular function

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
