Ch7 Flashcards
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What are cells? | Basic units of life |
| What is the Cell Theory? | All living things are made of cells, cells are the basic units of structure and function, new cells are produced from existing cells |
| What is the nucleus? | A large membrane-enclosed structure that contains a cell's genetic material in the form of DNA |
| What are eukaryotes? | Cells with nuclei;genetic material is seperated from rest of the cell |
| What are prokaryotes? | Cells with no nuclei; genetic material elsewhere |
| What are oranelles? | "Organs" of cells |
| What is the cytoplasm? | The portion of a cell outside of the nucleusa |
| What is the nuclear envelope? | Two membranes surrounding the nucleus |
| What is Chromatin? | DNA bound to protein |
| What are chromosomes? | Genetic info passed from one cell to the next |
| What is the nucleoulus? | Origin of ribosome assembly |
| What are ribosomes? | Small particles of RNA that make proteins |
| What is the Endoplasmic Reticulum | Internal membrane where lipid componenets of the cell membrane are assembled |
| What is the Golgi Apparatus? | Modifies, sorts, and packages proteins from the ER |
| What are Lysosomes? | Small organelles filled with digestive ezymes |
| What is a vacuole? | Sacks that store water, salt and proteins |
| What are mitochondria? | Organelles that convert chemical energy into usable compounds |
| What are chloroplasts? | Organelles that capture sunlight for photosynthesis |
| What is the cytoskeleton? | A network of protein filaments that maintains the cell's structure and shape |
| What are centrioles? | Structures that form tubulin and organize cell divison |
| What is the cell membrane? | Thin flexible barrier surrounding the cell |
| What is the cell wall? | Strong supporting layer around a cell |
| What is the lipid bilayer? | A double layer of lipids that make up the cell membrane |
| What is concentration? | THe mass solute in a given solution |
| What is diffusion? | When particles in a solution move from a more concentrated area to a less concentrated one |
| What is equilibrium? | When the concentration is the same throughout a solution |
| What is osmosis? | Diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane |
| Isotonic | Two solution of the same concentration |
| Hypertonic | The more concentrated solution |
| Hypotonic | The less concentrated solution |
| Facilitated Diffusion | The assistance of the diffusion of glucose across the membrane |
| Active Transport | Transport of materials against diffusion |
| Endocytosis | Transportations of material by means of inpockets in the cell membrane |
| Phagocytosis | Extension of cytoplasm surrounding a particle and package it within a food vacuole |
| Pinocytosis | Cells take up liquid by using pockets to fill up liquid |
| Cell Specialization | The development of cells for a specific task |
| Tissue | Similar cell groups that perform a specific function |
| Organ | Groups of tissue that work together |
| Organ System | A group of organs to work together to perform a specific function |
