| Ribosome | Makes Proteins in the Cell |
| Cell Membrane | Determines what can enter and leave the cell. |
| Cell Wall | In plant cells only. Gives structure and support to cells |
| Cytoplasm | The thick gel-like fluid that surrounds organelles. |
| Mitochondria | The Powerhouse of the cell. Where respiration occurs |
| Chloroplast | Only found in plant cells. It is where the sun's energy is converted to chemical energy. |
| Organelle | A small organ-like structure in a cell. |
| Vacuole | A storage place in a cell for food, water, or waste. |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | Transport tubes in cells |
| Lipid | A high energy molecule used for storarge. Examples are fats and oils. |
| Protein | Molecules made from amino acids that for building body tissues. Meats and eggs are high in this type of molecule. |
| Carbohydrates | Compounds that have high energy. Examples include sugars and starches. |
| Nucleic Acids | DNA and RNA. Used to transmit genetic information. The instructions for what cells do. |
| Diffusion | The flow of materials from high to low concentration |
| Osmosis | The diffusion of water |
| Concentration | How tightly packed a material is. |
| All cells come from | other cells |
| Cells are the basic unit of | structure and function in living things. |
| All living things are made of | cells |
| Independent Variable | The variable that is controlled by the experimenter. Usually thought of as the cause. |
| Dependent Variable | The variable that responds to the independent variable. Usually thought of as the effect. |
| Hypothesis | A statement of what one might expect to occur. A prediction. Often contains the words if and then. |
| Mass | The measure of the amount of matter in an object. Often measured with a balance. |
| Volume | The measure of the amount of space that an object takes up. Can be measure by displacement or l X W X H. |
| Length | The distance from one point to another. Measured with a ruler. |
| Organic | A compound composed mainly of carbon. It usually contains hudrogen also. |
| Atom | The smallest part of an element. |
| Element | A substance composed of only one type of matter. It can not be broken down to simpler substances by ordinary means. |
| Compound | Two or more atoms chemically combined. |
| Electron Microscope | Uses a beam of electrons to magnify things as much as a million times. |
| Compound Microscope | Uses a light source and two or more lenses to magnify an object as much as 1000 times. |
