QuestionAnswer
Hydrologic cycle is dominated by? Evaporation and percipitation
A stream is: A body of flowing water confined within a channel
Surface runoff can occur via two ways, which are? Channeled and overland flow
Stream size and shape is determined by? Climate (precipitation and temperature, Vegetation (dependent on amount), underyling geology of river, Regional slope, amount of water accommodated
The two most common stream types are? Meandering and braided
Helical flow is? Circular flow of water in a linear direction.
What is the result of helical flows? Lateral channel migration (change in river channel)
Flooding occurs when? The channel volume is greater than the yearly average maximum channel discharge. Flooding occurs when water overrides the channel banks.
Which factors affect flooding? Precipitation, Rate of infiltration, Topography and geology, and vegetation.
Erosion occurs on the_____; and deposition occurs on the inside of bends, which is called? Cutbank; point bars
What are the primary effects of flood damage? 1) Destruction by currents, debris, sediments (large boulders) 2) Erosion and deposition of sediment and debris 3) Injury and loss of life
What are the secondary effects of flood damage? Mass movements, hunger and disease, pollution, displacement, loss of life by indirect causes (i.e., infection) -Secondary effects are triggered by flooding or erosion by moving water
What can be used to reduce/prevent longshore(littoral, beach) drift? Groins (best ones), jetties, seawalls, breakwaters. Other options: move further inland or rebuild the beach.
What factors affect the stability of a slope? Geology, geometry, moisture content, vegetation, and human activity.
Angle of repose increases as what two things increase? Size of particle, and angularity of particle increases
