Chapter 2-Earth Sci.
Measuring Earth
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Models | Simmilar copies or representations of a system. |
| Physical Model | Uses observations of sight to provide us with information. |
| Laboratory Model | Simulate natural events (Simulate-make the appearence of, create likeness of) |
| Mental Model | Ideas or images of something in your mind that you try to understand. |
| Mathematical Models | Formuals and equations used in science. |
| Graphic Model | Graphs used to simplify certin relationships. |
| Layers of the earth | Crust-Top layer Mantle-Under the crust, thickest layer Outer Core-Liquid Inner Core-Solid |
| Outer Part of earth | Lithospehere, hydrosphere, and the atmosphere |
| Lithosphere | Rock near earth's surface, solid shell around the earth |
| Hydrosphere | The thin layer of water on the lithosphere, made mostly of oceans but also lakes, rivers, etc. |
| Atmosphere | Thin shell of gases, least dense. Layered, with each layer having its own different characteristics of temperature and composition. |
| Coordinate System | Used to determine the location of a point on earth's surface. It consists of immaginary lines. |
| Baisis for latitude and longitude | Earth's rotation and the observations of the Sun and stars. The rotation determines the poles and equator. |
| Latitude | Distance in degrees north or south of the equator. |
| Parallels of Latitude | Points with the same angular distance from the equator have the same latitude lie on circles called the parallels of latitude. |
