chapter 2 of science grade 7

QuestionAnswer
What is a wave? a disturbance that transfers energy from place to place.
What causes waves? Mechanical waves are produced when a source of energy causes a medium to vibrate.
what is energy? the ability to do work.
What is a medium? the material through which waves travel.
What are the basic properties of waves? Aptitude, wavelength, speed and frequency.
What is a vibration? a repeated back-and-forth or up-and-down movement.
What does an electromagnetic wave consist of? vibrating electric and magnetic fields that move through space at the speed of light.
What is a crest? the high point of a wave.
What is a trough? The low point of a wave.
What is amplitude? The maximum distance that particles of the medium carrying the wave move away from their rest positions.
What is a wavelength? The distance between two corresponding wavelengths.
What is frequency? The number of complete waves that pass a given point in a certain amount of time.
What is hertz? What frequency is measured in.
What is an electromagnetic wave? It transfers electrical and magnetic energy.
What is the electromagnetic spectrum? the complete range of electromagnetic waves placed in order.
What is visible light? electromagnetic waves that you can see.
What are the waves of the electromagnetic spectrum? (low to high) Radio waves, microwaves, infrared rays, visible light, ultraviolet rays, x-rays, gamma rays.
How does visible light interact with an object? When light strikes an object, the light can be reflected, transmitted, or absorbed.
What does a transparent material do? it transmits most of the light.
What does a translucent material do? It scatters light.
What does an opaque object do? It reflects or absorbs all the light that strikes it.
What determines the color of an opaque object? The color of the light it reflects.
What are the primary colors of light? Red, green, and blue.
What are the primary colors of pigment? yellow, cyan, and magenta.
What is a pigment? colored substances that are used to color other materials.
What is reflection? When an object or a wave bounces of an object it cannot pass.
What is the law of reflection? The angle of incidence must equal the angle of reflection.
What is a plane mirror? a flat sheet of glass that has a smooth, silvery coating on one side.
What is an image? a copy of an object formed by reflected of refracted rays of light.
What is a virtual image? Upright image that forms where light seems to come from.
What is a concave mirror? A mirror with a surface that curves inward.
What is an optical axis? an imaginary line that divides the mirror in half.
hat is the focal point? The point at which rays parallel to the optical axis meet.
What is areal image? It forms where rays actually meet.
What is a convex mirror? A mirror with a surface that curves outward.
What is refraction? The bending of light waves due to a change of speed.
Why do light rays bend when they enter a new medium at an angle? The change in speed causes the rays to bend.
What is a lens? A curved piece of glass
What is a convex lens? Its thicker at the center and curved at the edges.
What is a concave lens? Its thinner at the center and thicker at the edges.
