Carbohydrates are nutrients made of what three elements? Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. It is abbreviated CHO.
What is a monosaccharide? A carbohydrate that has one sugar unit. Monosaccharides are the building blocks for all carbohydrates. They have one sugar unit.
Give some examples of monosaccharides. Corn syrup, fruits, and honey.
What is a disaccharide? A carbohydrate that has 2 sugar units.
Give some examples of disaccharides. Table sugar, molasses, sweetner in food products.
What are polysaccharides? Carbohydrates that have many sugar units.
Give some examples of ploysaccharides. Grains (Cereal, bread, crackers), rice, corn, beans and potatoes.
The sugar to which all sugars are converted and the one that circulates in the blood to provide major fuel for the body's cells is? Glucose
Why are carbohydrates considered "quick-energy" foods? Because the body can rapidly break them down and use them quickly.
What is the function of carbohydrates in the body? Carbohydrates are the body's primary fuel source.
The sweetest tasting sugar is? Fructose
The sugar that comes from the digestion of milk sugar or lactose is? Galactose
Another name for common table sugar is? Sucrose
What is the most common disaccharide? Sucrose (table sugar)
Give some examples of foods that are high in dietary fiber. Beans, berries, bananas, broccoli, carrots, potatoes and corn.
Why is dietary fiber considered an asset in one's diet? Because it provides importand bulk in the diet. It also affects nutrient absorption and benefits health.
What are major food sources of starch and give some examples? Major food sources of starch are grains. Some examples are cereal, pasta and crackers.
An example of food low in carbohydrates is: A)low fat yogurt B)steak C)beans D)potatoes B)steak
The nutrients that provide energy are? Carbohydrates, fats and proteins.
The body's primary source of fuel for heat and energy is: Carbohydrates (starches and sugars).
