| 4 major factors affecting climate | Latitude Elevation Proximity to bodies of water Position relative to mountains |
| Climate zones | Tropics – 23.5oN to 23.5oS; most direct sunlight Temperate zones – 23.5o to 66.5o N and S; seasons change Polar zones – 66.5o to 90o N and S; most indirect sunlight. |
| How does elevation affect climate? | Because Earth’s atmosphere is thinner at high altitudes, the air in the mountains has fewer molecules to absorb heat. At the same latitude, climate is colder in the mountains than at sea level. |
| Proximity to Bodies of Water | Water heats and cools more slowly than land; therefore, water keeps coastal areas cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter than inland areas. |
| How do mountains affect climate? | Rain shadow Effect As warm, moist air runs into a mountain, it rises, cools, and the water vapor condenses into clouds. Precipitation is dropped on the windward (western) slopes. |
