| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| species richness | the number of species in the community, simple count of the speices in the community |
| species evenness | the relative abundance of each species, total count of the species |
| species-area effect | most often applied to islands where the area is clearly limited by geography,a pattern of species richness says larger areas usually contain more species than smaller areas |
| disturbances | events that change communities, remove or destroy organisms from communnities, or alter resource availability |
| stability | the tendency of a community to maintain relatively constant conditions |
| ecological succession | the gradual sequental regrowth of a community of species in an area |
| primary succession | the development of a community in an area that has not supported life previously, such as a bare rock, a sand dune, or an island formed by a volcanic eruption, soil is not origionnally present |
| seconday succession | the sequential replacement of speicies that follows disruption of an existing community may stem from natural disturbances such as a forest fire. occurs when soil is already present |
| pioneer species | tend to be small, grow quickly, and reproduce quickly so they are well suited for invading and occupying a disturbed habitat they may also be very good at dispersing their seeds |
| climax community | the organisms in each stage alter the physical environment in ways that make it less favorable for their own survival but more favorable for the organisms that eventually succeed them |
