| What is the difference between atomic mass and average atomic mass? | The average atomic mass of an element is the weighted average mass of the mixture of an element's isotopes. The mass number is the sum of the protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom. |
| What is special about the noble gases? | noble gases are all very stable because they each have the maximum amount of electrons in their outer shell. They are also nonreactive and cannot form compounds. |
| How do ionic bonds form? | When atoms lose or gain or share electrons. |
| What is a compound? | A substance that is composed of atoms of two or more different elements that are chemically combined. |
| What is an isotope? | Atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons in the nucleus |
| What is an ion? | Atom or group of atoms that gain or lose electrons; has an electrical charge. |
| What is an ionic bond? | Chemical bond formed by the attractive forces between two ions of opposite charge. |
| What is a covalent bond? | Chemical bond formed when two atoms share electrons |
| What is a pH number? | A measure of how acidic or basic a solution is. |
