What is the maintenance of a constand internal state in a changing environment? Homeostasis
What is reproduction in which the sex cells from 2 parents unite, producing offspring that shares traits from both parents? Sexual reproduction
What is reproduction that does not involve the union of sex cells and in which one parent produces offspring identical to itself? Asexual reproduction
What is the passing of gentic traits from parent to offspring? Heredity
What is the sum of all chemical processes that occur in an organism? Metabolism
What is an organism that can make its own food by using energy from its surroundings? Producer
What is an organism that eats other organisms or organic matter? Consumer
What is an organism that gets energy by breaking down the remains of dead organisms or animal wastes and consuming or absorbing the nutrients? Decomposer
What is a molecule that is made up of amino acids and that is needed to build and repair body structures and to regulate processes in the body? Protein
What is a class of energy-giving nutrients that includes sugars. starches, and fiber; contains carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen? Carbohydrate
What is a type of biochemical that does not dissolve in water? Lipid

What is a molecule that acts as the main energy source for cell processes? ATP
What is a molecule made up of subunits called nucleotides? Nucleic acid
What are three examples of stimuli? Chemicals, gravity, and light.
What does DNA do? DNA controls the structure and function of cells.
What do organisms pass on to their offspring? Copies of their DNA.
What are three examples of activities of life carried out by all organisms? Making food, breaking down food, and moving materials into and out of cells.
How does a single-celled organism grow? by growing larger over time and dividing, making other organisms.
How do organisms with many cells grow? the number of cells gets larger and the organism gets bigger
What are the four basic need of every organism? Food, water, air, and a place to live
Cells of most living things are made apprimately of what? 70% water
Most of the chemical reactions involved in metabolism require what? Water
Air is a mixture of gases, including oxygen and what? Carbon dioxide
What is a chemical process in which most living things use oxygen? Releasing energy from food.
Green plants, algae, and some bacteria need carbon dioxide gas in addition to what? Oxygen
Green organisms convert energy in sunlight to energy stored in food during what? Photosynthesis.
What do all organisms do to food in order to use the nutrients in it? All organisms break down their food in order to use nutrients in it.
Nutrients are made up of what, a substance created when 2 or more atoms combine? Molecules.
Molecules made of different kinds of atoms are called what? Compunds.
What are the five chemical buliding blocks of cells? Proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, ATP, and nucleic acids.
What are compounds that make up proteins? Amino acids.
What are proteins that speed up chemical reactions? Enzymes.
What is a protein found in red blood cells that attaches to oxygen? Hemoglobin.
What is a nutrient involved in almost all life process? Protein.
How do cells use carbohydrates? As a source of energy and for energy storage.
Carbohydrates made of one sugar molecule or a dew linked sugar molecules are called what? Simple carbohydrates.
What is an example of a simple carbohydrate? table sugar.
A carbohydrate made of hundreds of molecules linked together is called a what? complex carbohydrate.
The molecules that form much of the cell membrane are what? Phospholipids.
What is a difference between fats and oils? at room temperature, most fats are solids and most oils are liquids.
Why are nucleic acids called the blueprints of life? They have all the info needed for a cell to make proteins.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
