QuestionAnswer
What are the characteristics of living things? Cells, sense/respond to change, reproduction, DNA, energy use, growing and developing
What are the two types of reproduction? Sexual and asexual
What are the five chemical building blocks of cells? Proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, ATP, and nucleic acids
For most organisms, how much of the body is water? About 70%
How are decomposers and producers different? Decomposers break down the nutrients in dead organisms while producers make their own food.
What is heredity? The passing of genetic traits from parent to offspring
What is the difference between asexual and sexual reproduction? Asexual reproduction is when a single parent produces offspring that is identical to the parent. Sexual reproduction is when two parents produce offspring that will share characteristics of both parents.
What is a carbohydrate? A class of energy giving nutrients that includes sugars, starches, and fiber: it contains carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.
How are lipids and phospholipids different? Lipids store energy while phospholipids form cell membranes.
Why are nucleic acids called the blueprints of life? Because nucleic acids have all the information needed for a cell to make proteins.
What are the four basic needs of every organism? Water, air, food, and a place to live
What does DNA do? Controls the structure and function of cells
Why must organisms maintain stable internal conditions? Because many chemical changes can only occur when the conditions are just right.
What does homeostasis mean? maintaining stable internal conditions
What is the major energy-carrying molecule in the cell? ATP
What is the smallest unit that can perform all life processes? The cell
About how long can humans survive without water? About 3 days
What is nucleic acid? a molecule made up of subunits called nucleotides
What is metabolism? The sum of all chemical processes that occur in an organism
What is a stimulus? Anything that causes a reactionor change in an organism or any part of the organism
What are three examples of stimulus? Chemicals, gravity, light
What is a consumer? an organism that eats other organisms or organic matter
What is protein? a molecule that is made up of amino acids and that is needed to build and repair body structures and to regulate processes in the body
What is the difference between fats and oils? Fats are solids at room temperature while oils are liquid at room temperature
What are the two types of carbohydrates? Simple and complex
Most chemical reactions involving metabolism requir what? Water
What does a cell contain? All things necessary for life
What is your body trying to do when it is sweating or shivering? It is trying to cool down if it is sweating and trying to warm up if it is shivering
What is an example of a simple carbohydrate? Table salt is a simple carbohydrate
How to green plants, algae, and some bacteria make food? They convert carbon dioxide and oxygen into food and oxygen in a process called photosynthesis. They convert the energy insunlightto energy stored in food.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
