What is stimulus? anything that causes a reaction or change in an organism or any part of an organism
What is a cell? the smallest unit that can preform all life processes; cells are covered by a membrane and have DNA and cytoplasm
What is homeostasis? the maintenance of a constant internal state in a changing enviroment
What is sexual reproduction? reproduction in which the sex cells from two parents unite, producing offspring that share traits from both parents
What is assexual reproduction? reproducing that does not involve the union of sex cells and in which one parent produces offspring indentical to itself
What is heredity? the passing of genetic traits from one parent to offspring
What is metabolism? the sum of all chemical processes that occur in an organism
What is a producer? an organism that can make its own food by using energy from its surrondings
What is a consumer? an organism that eats other organisms or organic matter
What is a decomposer? an organism that gets energy by breaking down the remains of dead organisms or animal wastes and consuming or absorbing the nutirents
What is protein? a molecule that is made up of amino acids and that is needed to build and repair body structures and to regulate processes in the body
What is carbohydrates? a class of energygiving nutrients that include sugars, starches, and fiber; contains carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
What is a lipid? a type of biochemical that does not disslove in water; fats and steriods are lipids
What is a phosopholipid? a lipid that contains phosphorus and that is structural component in cell membranes
What is ATP? a molecule that acts as the main energy source for cell processes
Starch is an example of ___________ and is made up of sugars. Carbohydrates
Organisms store energy in _____________. Lipids
What is the difference between simple and complex carbohydrates? Simple only contains one sugar molecule while complex had hundreds of sugar molecules.
What are the necessities of life? Water, air, a place to live, and food.
What are the characteristics of living things? Living things have cells, living things sense and respond to change, living things reproduce, living things have DNA, living things use energy and living things grow and develop.
Name three examples of proteins. Spider webs, hair and feathers are all made up of proteins.
What compounds cannot mix with water? Lipids
Name two things that are lipids. Fats and oils.
What is the difference between a consumer and a decomposer? A consumer eats other organisms (which are alive) and organic matter, while a decomposer gets energy from breaking down the remains of dead organisms or animal waste.
What is the diiference between sexual and assexual reproduction? Sexual reproduction invloves two parents while assexual reproduction only involves one parent.
