Pain

Endorphins Morphine like substances released by the body that appear to alter the perception of pain.`
Enkephalins Opioids that are widespread throughout the brain and dorsal horn of the spinal cord and are believed to reduce pain sensation by inhibiting the release of substance P.
Opioids Narcotic analgesics such as morphine and codeine.
Analgesics Pharmaceutical agent used to relieve pain. The 3 classes are nonopioids, opioids, and adjuvants.
Ajuvant Analgesics Enhance the effect of nonopioids, help alleviate other symptoms that aggrevate pain(depression,seizures,inflammation) and are useful for treating neuropathic pain.
Nonopioids Acetaminophen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDs), are appropriate for treating mild to moderate pain.
Dynorphin The endorphin having the most analgesic effect.
Nociceptors Pain receptors
Gate control theory Excitatory pain stimuli carried by small diameter nerve fibers can be blocked by inhibiting signals carried by large diameter nerve fibers.
Naloxone (Narcan) is an opioid antagonist that reverses the respiratory-depressant effect of an opioid.
