Organic Molecules

QuestionAnswer
Element most basic, pure substance that can not be broken down
Nucleus contains DNA and RNA of the cell
Compound two or more substances combined to form a chemical of set proportions
Metabolism process inside every organism that is necessary in order to maintain life; rate at which you burn calories
Mixture two or more elements that are together but not chemically bound
solution when a solute (ex. Airborne) is dissolved in a solvent (ex. water) the product is a solution
pH scale that measures how acidic or basic a solution is
Acid 1-6 on pH scale; Increases in hyronium ions when dissolved in water
Base 8-14 on pH scale; increases in number of ions when dissolved in water
Molecule a group of atoms held together by a covalent bond (no overall charge)
Polymer a large molecule formed when many smaller molecules bond together
Carbohydrate carbon, hydrogen and oxygen (2 hydrogen to 1 oxygen for every carbon atom) -simplest kind of carbohydrate is a simple sugar
Lipid FAT (oil, waxes, steroids) INsoluble in water
Protein large complex polymers composed of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sometimes sulfur
Amino Acid basic unit of a protein; 20
Peptide Bonds links an amino acid
Enzyme located in metabolism process; protein that changes the rate of a chemical reaction
Nucleic Acid complex biomolecule that stores cellular information in the form of DNA and RNA
Nucleotide phosphirus atoms arranged in three groups (nitrogenous base, simple sugar and phosphate group)
Substrate Molecules that by the help of enzymes undergo chemical change to form new chemicals
Active Site located on the enzyme in the shape of the substrate

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
