| Eon | Two or more geological eras combined. It is the largest division of geologic time, lasting many hundreds of millions, or even billions of years. |
| Era | a major division of geological time; it is usually divided into two or more periods. |
| Period | The basic unit of geological time in which a single type of rock system is formed, lasting tens of millions of years. |
| Epoch | A particular period of geologic time marked by distinctive features, events, etc... such as an ice age. |
| Precambrian Era | From 4600 to 540 mya. |
| Precambrian Era | During this era, the Earth formed, seas formed, mountains began to grow, oxygen built up in the atmosphere, and life began in the oceans. |
