Macromolecules

What is a macromolecule? a very large molecule
What is a monomer? A small molecule that is a repeating building block of a larger molecule
What is a polymer? A molecule that is made of many monomers
what are the four main types of macromolecules? carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids
what is the name of the monomer that makes carbohydrates? monosaccharide
what is the name of the monomer that makes up proteins? amino acids
what is the name of the monomer that makes up nucleic acids? nucleotides
what is the main job of carbohydrates? short term energy storage, cell structure
What is the main job of lipids? long term extra energy storage, cell membranes, chemical messengers
what is the main job of nucleic acids? DNA/RNA stores and transmits genetic information
what is the main job of proteins? enzymes to carry out chemical reactions, hormones, make hair and nails
examples of foods containing carbohydrates sugars, starch, pasta, potatoes, fruit
examples of foods containing proteins meat, beans, milk, eggs
examples of foods containing lipids fats, oils, waxes, steroids
where do we get nucleic acids from? our body makes its own nucleic acids, but we get materials to make them from everything that we eat.
