Properties of Water

QuestionAnswer
Why is water polar? the electrons are more attracted to the oxygen molecule than the hydrogen molecules, so that there is an uneven sharing of electrons. THis results in a negative charge at the oxygen and a positive charge at the hydrogen end
What is a hydrogen bond? When the hydrogen of one water molecule is attracted to the oxygen of another water molecule. AKA a weak bond between to water molecules
What causes all of water's special properties? water's polarity and ability to form hydrogen bond.
What is cohesion? when water sticks to itself
What is adhesion? when water sticks to another substance
what is surface tension? water forms a film at the edge of a surface due to hydrogen bonding, and has the ability to support small objects
What is capillary action? When water moves through a narrow space up against gravity
Why is water called the universal solvent? Water can dissolve (break into smaller pieces) almost anything.
Which properties of water are involved in the : formation of water droplet cohesion: water sticks together surface tension: forms a film at the edges of the surface
Which properties of water are involved in the : floating a paper clip surface tension: film supports small objects adhesion: water sticks to paper clip cohesion: water sticks together to prevent paper clip from sinking through
Which properties of water are involved in the : plants moving water from their roots to their stems and leaves capillary action
Which properties of water are involved: when you put a teaspoon of sugar into a cup of water ability to dissolve

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
