QuestionAnswer
Light Microscope A microscope that uses light that passes through a specimen.
Electron Microscope A microscope that uses a beam of electrons, gives greater resolution.
Scanning Electron Microscope A microscope that looks at the surface of cells or structures.
Transmission Electron Microscope A microscope used to study the details of internal cell structure.
Cell Theory 1 All living things are composed of one or more cells.
Cell Theory 2 All cells come from preexisting cells.
Cell Theory 3 Cells are the basic units of structure and function.
Prokaryotic Characteristics Earliest form of life, single-celled, small, no nucleus, but DNA no internal organelles
Eukaryotic Characteristics Single-celled or multi-celled, larger, have nucleus w/ DNA, have organelles
What are the four Macromolecules? Carbohydrates Lipids Proteins Nucleic Acid
Carbohydrate Example Sugars, starches
Lipids Example Fats
Proteins Example Amino acids
Nucleic Acid Example RNA, DNA
What are these sugars? Glucose Lactose Cellulose Sucrose Blood sugar Milk sugar Plant Table sugar
Define Lipids Sources of energy, insulation, crucial elements of membranes. Soluble in water.
Fats: Saturated Solid at room temperature-found in animals
Fats: Unsaturated Liquid at room temperature-found in plants
Steroids Example Cholesterol Estrogen and testosterone Corticosteroids Anabolic
What is Cholesterol Helps regulate what goes into and out of cells.
What is Estrogen and Testosterone Secondary sex characteristics.
What is Corticosteroids Regulates metabolism and immune function
What is Anabolic Increases muscle mass.
What is Phospholipids Compose cell membrane. Phospholipid bi-layer.
What is Proteins Structure, support, movement, cellular defense. Amino acids.
What is Amino Acids Made in the body or attained through diet.
What is Nucleic Acid? Example DNA, RNA. Holds information necessary for protein synthesis. RNA carries info to the site of protein production.
