Bio

QuestionAnswer
Ecology The branch of biology that deals with the relations of organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings
Biosphere 1.The regions of the surface, atmosphere, and hydrosphere of the earth (or analogous parts of other planets) occupied by living organisms
Species 1.A group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals capable of exchanging genes or interbreeding. ex: dog, cat, humans
Population A community of animals, plants, or humans among whose members interbreeding occurs
Community A set of species found in the same habitat or ecosystem at the same time
Ecosystem A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment
Autotroph An organism that is able to form nutritional organic substances from simple inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide ex: plants
Heterotroph An organism deriving its nutritional requirements from complex organic substances ex:animals
Food Web A system of interlocking and interdependent food chains ex:plant-> bunny-> fox -> wolf
Trophic Level 1.Each of several hierarchical levels in an ecosystem, comprising organisms that share the same function in the food chain and the same nutritional relationship to the primary sources of energy
Biomass 1.The total mass of organisms in a given area or volume 2.Organic matter used as a fuel, esp. in a power station for the generation of electricity
Biogeochemical Cycle is a pathway by which a chemical element or molecule moves through both biotic (biosphere) and abiotic (lithosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere) compartments of Earth
Limiting Nutrient It is the nutrient which is lowest in supply in proportion to demand. (missing nutrient)
Weather The state of the atmosphere at a place and time as regards heat, dryness, sunshine, wind, rain, etc
Climate The weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period
Green House Effect The trapping of the sun's warmth in a planet's lower atmosphere due to the greater transparency of the atmosphere to visible radiation from the sun than to infrared radiation emitted from the planet's surface
Biotic Factor the action of the organism affects the life of another organism, for example a predator consuming its prey.
Abiotic Factor non-living chemical and physical factors in the environment.
Niche a term describing the relational position of an organism's species
Logistic Growth Change in the size of a population that is rapid at first, then decreases as the population approaches the carrying capacity of its environment.
Carrying Capacity The number of people, other living organisms, or crops that a region can support without environmental degradation
Demography The study of statistics such as births, deaths, income, or the incidence of disease, which illustrate the changing structure of human populations
Demographic Transition shift in a population from a situation of high natality and high mortality to a new situation where natality and mortality are low.
Green Revolution A large increase in crop production in developing countries achieved by the use of fertilizers, pesticides, and high-yield crop varieties
Renewable Resource any natural resource (as wood or solar energy) that can be replenished naturally with the passage of time
Pollutant waste matter that contaminates the water or air or soil
Biodiversity The variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem.
Biological Magnification is the increase in concentration of a substance
