|---|---|
| What is Ecology? | the branch of biology dealing with the relations and interactions between organisms and their environment, including other organisms. |
| What is biosphere? | the ecosystem comprising the entire earth and the living organisms that inhabit it. |
| What is Species? | composed of related individuals that resemble one another, are able to breed among themselves, but are not able to breed with members of another species. |
| What is populations? | the assemblage of a specific type of organism living in a given area. all the individuals of one species in a given area. |
| What is community? | A group of different species living in a sing place using each others recourses. |
| What is ecosystem? | a system formed by the interaction of a community of organisms with their environment. |
| What is an autotroph? | any organism capable of self-nourishment by using inorganic materials as a source of nutrients and using photosynthesis or chemosynthesis as a source of energy, as most plants and certain bacteria and protists. |
| What is a heterotroph? | an organism requiring organic compounds for its principal source of food. |
| What is food web? | a series of organisms related by predator-prey and consumer-resource interactions; the entirety of interrelated food chains in an ecological community. |
| What is trophich level? | A trophic level is the level an organism can be in in a food pyramid. Producers, Primary consumers, Secondary consumers and Tertiary consumers are all different trophic levels, from 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively. |
| What is biomass? | the amount of living matter in a given habitat, expressed either as the weight of organisms per unit area or as the volume of organisms per unit volume of habitat. |
| Biogeochemical cycle | The flow of chemical elements and compounds between living organisms and the physical environment. Chemicals absorbed or ingested by organisms are passed through the food chain and returned to the soil, air, and water by such mechanisms. |
| limiting nutrient | A limiting nutrient is a chemical necessary for plant growth. They are available in quantities smaller than needed for algae and macrophytes to increase their abundance. |
| Weather | The condition of earth's atmosphere at a particular time and place. |
| climate | Average year after year conditions of temperature and precipitation in a particular region |
| green house effect | Whe the earthe's climate is heating up do to radiation from the sun weakening the atmosphere of earth, letting in more of the suns rays in. |
| biotic factor | bioligical influence on organisms within the atmosphere |
| abiotic factor | physical or non-living thing that shapes an ecosystem |
| niche | the position or function of an organism in a community of plants and animals. |
| logistic growth | a growth pattern in which a populations growth rate slows or stops following a period of exponential growth. |
| carrying capacity | largest number of individuals of a population that a given enviroment can support. |
| demography | scientific study of human populations |
| demographic transition | change in a population from high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates. |
| green revolution | the development of highly productive crop strains and the use of modern agriculutural techniques to increase yields of food crops. |
| renewable resource | resource that can regenerate quickly and is replaceable. |
| pollutant | harmful material that can enter the biosphere through the land, air, or water. |
| biodiversity | biological diversity; the sum total of the variety of organisms in the biosphere |
| biological magnification | increasing concentration of a harmful substance in organisms at higher trophic levels in a food chain or fiid web. |
